Mission AccomplishedAn unfortunate choice of words for a title perhaps, given the fact that it was indeed an unfortunate choice of words when our current glorious leader chose to utter them while announcing the end of major combat operations in Iraq. I'm of the opinion that you should never give the enemy/opposition such a golden opportunity to attack unless you do so intentionally, in the hopes of luring them into supporting an untenable position. Not that I would ever do such a thing, of course. My usage of the term is far more modest in scope, so I should be safe enough. It merely refers to the fact that I've finally gotten to the point where I feel the site is more or less ready for public consumption, and thus am somewhat comfortable in promoting it. As to what I intend to offer in order to make the place a little different and thus (hopefully) more attractive than the thousands of blogs out there, I submit the following for your perusal. Politics: I am admittedly a conservative by nature, but don't assume that I have all the answers to the myriad questions out there. All opinions are welcome, just be prepared to defend your argument. If you come in merely reciting talking points or slogans from one side or the other, you may find yourself scrambling in order to stop the bleeding. In other words, "Bush lied, people died!" won't get quite the enthusiastic response that it garnered at your political pep rally. I've been told (and believe) that my outlook on things is a little different than average, and that will carry over into this site, I'm sure. I have an incurable case of sarcasm, and although some of my posts are intended to be quite serious, others may only appear to be so, on the surface. Some, of course, will be openly sardonic. I'm also hoping to have a few guest articles done, and there is one person in particular whom I've talked to about this at present. Since he has tentatively agreed to do some, I'll hold him to it. If he doesn't follow through I'll be forced to call him a lying, pathetic failure, although hopefully, I'll be calmed down enough by then in order to word it more nicely. Humor: (or the attempt thereof) This subject is basically wide open at this point. I plan on doing a "Dear Timmy" advice column, and will be doing song parodies, mainly political ones, but a few others too. I desperately need some musically inclined individuals to help make this a reality, as I can write the stuff, but trust me, you don't want to hear me sing. Any takers? I have a "Not quite right" quotes column that I haven't had time to work on just yet. There are a few other things I'm contemplating, but they aren't far enough along to comment on at this juncture. Rules: At this point "We don't need no stinking rules!" is good enough. Strangely though, I actually look forward to the day when they may become necessary. I love/hate paradoxes. In conclusion, it will be up to me to try to make the site enjoyable enough that you'll want to come here. I promise to do my best; time will tell as to whether or not I succeed. I do suggest that you hurry up and register before all the good user names are taken. Names like "Elvis", "Top Gun", and "Neanderthal". Wait a minute... I noticed "Neanderthal" is already taken. See what I mean? Thanks,

What should a good republican do in the situation that we are in now? I hear there is a libertarian that is thinking about running for President. Would that just split the republican vote.... that is already split? What is your advise?
advise
My advice (for what it's worth) is this. As a "good Republican" I believe you should support the party ticket at all levels other than presidential. While I will admit that John McCain would be a somewhat better choice than either of the Democrat contenders, by electing him we would be sending a message endorsing a party wide move to the left. The long term ramifications of doing so would be far worse than having a Democrat in the White House for the next four years, in my opinion.
I'm not so sure that the Republican vote is split so much as it's left without a viable alternate candidate. There are some conservatives that simply will not vote for McCain because of a number of his policies and past actions. I include myself among that group.
What to do, what to do? I'm of the opinion that you should vote for the candidate that would help further the conservative cause regardless of whom that person might be. Vote Democrat to show your displeasure with the "liberal lite" being offered up by the Republican hierarchy, vote Libertarian to show disdain for both parties, or vote Republican if you can honestly believe that McCain has miraculously discovered his conservative self, as he now wants us to believe.
We certainly live in interesting times, but I believe that's an old Chinese curse.
Can't bring myself to it
Your son would call me a wuss, but I couldn't bring myself to voting for Hillary in the primaries here in Texas a few weeks ago. With that in mind, there's no way I could vote for her or Obama in the general election; my conscious just won't allow it. Then there's the prospect that because of my vote (and of course many others) that this person now sits in the most powerful position in the world... while I have many problems with McCain, I'd rather vote on someone I agree with 70% of the time than someone I almost never agree with.
A few months ago I mentioned to Tim that I should just go vote for Obama because no matter who we vote for, we're screwed, so we may as well pin the blame for the US' downfall on the Democrats and their liberal agenda. However, at the end of the day, I lack the testicular fortitude needed to actually implement this. I care too much about our troops and our country to do such a thing, so unfortunately, McCain is getting my vote, because I know he supports our troops. He's over 70 years old, he's not changing his ways; he'll continue to shun the conservatives and go across the isle to the liberals. I'm hoping that being the President will have an impact on his policies, that instead of opening our borders, he'll actually move to enforce the laws that we have established.
Any way you slice it, this election sucks. There is no more distinction between Republicans and Democrats; so many are liberal when it comes down to it. The title of a recent book put it so clearly: Crazies to the Left of Me, Wimps to the Right: How One Side Lost Its Mind and the Other Lost Its Nerve. Hooray.
Hold your nose
The problem as I see it, is that voting for someone with whom you agree with 70% of the time (even less for me) may lead to the next guy/gal offered up by your party being only 50% acceptable. At what point do you just give up? There are (or were) distinct differences between conservative and liberal philosophies. John McCain has blurred those distinctions to the point where we now have to argue as to whether or not we can support the Republican nominee, depending on his percentage of liberal beliefs. That signals a dangerous shift in the direction the party is heading. If our choice is either to concede control to the left and get it over with, or to elect increasingly liberal Republicans and continue a slow retreat, I'm thinking the first option may be the best. At least it would offer the possibility of shocking people back to their senses after four glorious years of liberalism run amok. It's commendable that you are concerned with the welfare of the military. That's one of only two reasons that I think McCain would be the least offensive choice for president. The other is Supreme Court/judicial nominees, even though I don't fully trust him there either. Other than that, I don't think it's a good idea to rely on hope that once he's elected, he'll do the right thing. Past behavior is a more reliable indicator of what a person will do, and going by that, we're in trouble.
Good Posts
You are correct Mathachew. Mccain will not change his ways. nor his opinions. Don't count on him enforcing the border laws either. There are so many illegals in the United States already, none of the presidential candidates want to scare their votes away.

poor choices
Funny how that works, isn't it? These self serving politicians are falling all over themselves kowtowing to illegal aliens, while contemptuously taking their loyal bases for granted. I think it's time for both sides to get disloyal. A true third party alternative would be a great thing at this point.
Another major point of contention that I have with McCain is his global warming stance. That in itself would keep me from backing him.
